Should I build or buy a home?

At Hensley Park Homes we believe that everybody should have the opportunity to build their own dream, instead of just buying someone else’s.

Purchasing a new home is a big investment and an exciting one.  For some it closes one chapter of their life and opens another; for some, it’s the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.  Whatever your age or stage in life, your new house should be the realisation of your dreams; a home that ticks all the boxes and suits your needs and tastes, from floor to ceiling! But it begs the question, should I build or buy a home?

When we take a step back and look at it, any home is the result of somebody’s dream.  Somebody planned it, they chose the layout, the colour palette, and the landscaping design.  At Hensley Park Homes we believe that everybody should have the opportunity to build their own dream, instead of just buying someone else’s.

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer…” (Harriet Tubman)

Many Australian homeowners still see buying an existing home as the ‘quick-fix’ to upgrading or taking that next step in life.  For some this may be a good option (we acknowledge that there will always be a market for people buying existing homes – what doesn’t suit one person may happen to fulfil another’s needs and wants, and for whatever reason, buying may prove to be the best option) but what they don’t always stop to consider are the reasons behind the sale of the property they are committing to purchase: if this was once someone’s dream home, why are they trying to offload it now?  Is it structurally unsound? Maybe the location is a bad one?  Or is it too small?  Has the design dated?  Is it very inefficient?  There are many different reasons why homeowners sell their properties and move on, and as a buyer, you need to be aware that what looks like a good investment at first glance might actually turn out to be a bad one.

So, should I build or buy a home? Well, let’s get down to business!  Every new home begins with an inspiration.  We get it: the idea of building a new home may seem daunting, and as with any fresh step we take in life, there are always plenty of people to discourage you from reaching for the stars.  But believe us: it’s not as hard as it may seem, and you deserve to have the house that you’ve always wanted!

The advantages of building your own home are huge.  Not only can you enjoy a design that suits you and your family to a tee, but there are undeniable financial benefits too – with a design that’s tailored to your needs, there’s no need for costly renovations.  We don’t try to pretend that building is totally challenge-free, but the team at Hensley Park has over 15 years’ experience in helping homeowners create and live their dreams.  We understand your concerns and we’re here to help you through each step of the emotional and practical journey.

To help clarify the benefits of building your own home, we’ve taken the time here to discuss three of the concerns commonly expressed by our clients, and explain our approach to these issues:

How long will it take?

We lead busy lives and for most of us, time is of the essence.  With this in mind, buying a new home may seem attractive to some, because it’s a relatively quick process – the move can often be over and done with within 2 months, albeit the home may not be perfect.  In some situations, this may be appropriate due to the circumstances, however, when we stand back and look at our lives as a big picture, a few extra months isn’t long to wait if the result is exactly what you’ve always dreamed of!

At Hensley Park we don’t string things out: we are a professional company and we get our homes completed in the shortest possible time-frame.  But the bottom line of it is that when you’re dealing with important investments such as your home and ultimately your lifestyle, it’s very important to think long term: where you want to be and how you want to be living your life in 5, 10, or even 20 years’ time?

Finding Land

When it comes to land, let’s put it out there: in Australia, we’re really spoiled for choice!  Despite planning regulations, market demand and other influential factors, there’s plenty of land available. It might simply require a little digging around to find it.  Talk to townspeople; talk to real estate agents and get your name down on their lists; ask questions and be prepared to think outside the box.  And if you’d like some extra support, the team at Hensley Park is able to assist you in finding the ideal parcel of land for your dream home – we’re accustomed to dealing with real estate agents and we’d be glad to help out.

All the Headaches

For many people, their fears (whether genuine or unfounded) are their own worst enemy when it comes to building a home. Paperwork; finance; legal documents; permits…. it all seems like a mountain and they hardly know where to start!  Hensley Park Homes to the rescue!  We have the experience and the systems in place to help you every step of the way, making your home building journey an easy and enjoyable experience.  We understand the challenges of country building and we thrive on overcoming issues and building homes that are as functional as they are beautiful.  It takes courage to follow a dream through to completion, but don’t give up: your passion for the home of your dreams will certainly be rewarded!
